Bone Density

Gateway Fitness will be offering Bone Density Scanning to all members very soon. This test, which generally determines the density and strength of your bones, is perfect for those women concerned about Osteoporosis whether pre-menopausal or post. For men & women alike, it is a perfect tool to see where your bones “stack up.” A Bone Density test uses special x-rays to measure how many grams of calcium and other bone minerals, collectively known as bone mineral content, are packed into a segment of bone. The higher your mineral content, the denser your bones are(stronger). The denser they generally are, the less likely they are to break from a fall or under extreme load/pressure. Doctors utilize a bone density test to determine if you have, or at risk for, Osteoporosis. Both men and women are at risk for Osteoporosis. Other than gender and age, additional contributing factors are smoking, high caffeine consumption, alcohol, lack of exercise(resistance training, load bearing activities) and of course, poor nutritional habits.

General weight bearing exercises, commonly referred to as resistance exercise, can be a positive step in slowing the advancement of osteoporosis as well as reducing the effects once diagnosed. (Always consult your physician before engaging in any type of exercise if you have been diagnosed with Osteopenia, Osteoporosis, Advanced Osteoporosis.)

The fee for BDT will range from $45 to $100 depending on the extent of the test requested and will take merely a few minutes with a full printout.
